2018 Goals & My Word of the Year

January 1, 2018
AUTHOR: Emilie

For Type-As like me, the goal-setting associated with the new year is like a second Christmas right after Christmas. For me, yearly goal setting is an intense process, one I’ve been working hard on since November. I’ve been using my PowerSheets from the Cultivate What Matters Shop for goal setting for THREE years now. On its own, the PowerSheets can guide you to setting intentional goals that will bring you closer to the life you want to live. Like all workbooks, you will get out of the PowerSheets what you put into them, but I have been pouring hours of myself into them for weeks, so I am confident that this will be another rockin’ year!

I’ll be sharing more about how I use the PowerSheets to I set goals and how I execute on my goals using quarterly planning and my Todoist account later this month. For now, I’d like to share with you the goals I have set for 2018!

In case you missed it, I shared my 2017 recap yesterday that included how I did on the 10 goals I set for last year. I also cover important information like which books I read; I’d say it’s worth taking a read to see how I did!

Word of the Year: Finish

The theme that I’ve laid out for myself is finish. This year I will finish foundational work!

  • Finish courses I’ve signed up for
  • Finish my rebrand
  • Finish (or make progress) reading books that are already on my shelf
  • Finish my ornament
  • Finish paying off my debt
  • … etc

You get the point. This will be the year that I focus on finishing the open loops from the previous year. I think it makes sense when you read may goals.

Goal 1

Goal 1: Read 36 Books without buying ANY. In 2016, I read 26 books. In 2017, I read 32. In 2018, I want to read 36.

Why? I love learning and have found reading to be a great way to continuously be learning. I find satisfaction in reading new and exciting books and making progress on this goal.

The positive effect taking action on this goal may have on my life and others: I will grow in knowledge AND I’ll be sure that I’m spending time away from screens.

How I will feel at the end of this year having made progress on this goal: This is a huge reach, but if I hit this it will be my best reading year yet, so hugely accomplished!

Starting steps: 1. 3 Books per month 2. 150 pages per week 3. 23 pages per day

How I will know I accomplished or made progress on this goal: I will track my reading progress in Goodreads.

Encouraging words: There is so much to still learn. Go learn it!

How I will celebrate at the end of 2018: Since part of this goal is not buying any new books, I will reward myself with three brand new books going into 2019!

Goal 2

Goal 2: Get into AND sustain the best shape of my life.

Why? In 2017, I got into the best shape of my life, but when my routine was uprooted by a new job and travel, I lost it. This year, I want to get back into that peak shape and stay there- especially through the wedding!

The positive effect taking action on this goal may have on my life and others: When I don’t workout, I do a poor job of caring for my body.

How I will feel at the end of this year having made progress on this goal: Strong and beautiful!

Starting steps: 1. Go. to. the. gym. 2. Sign up for a half marathon. 3. Develop a training plan for said half marathon.

How I will know I accomplished or made progress on this goal: I am measuring this goal in three ways: 1. 300 lb deadlift, 2. Running a half marathon, 3. getting 10 double unders

Encouraging words: Working out is the ultimate form of self-care.

How I will celebrate at the end of 2018: A new Bikini for our honeymoon.

Goal 3

Goal 3: Stitch the Baltimore ornament by July.

Why? I loved being able to see the North Carolina ornament that I stitched on our tree this year! I want to capture all the places we live in Ornaments. This will need to be done in July to ensure there is plenty of time for it to be finished prior to Christmas.

The positive effect taking action on this goal may have on my life and others: I love being able to work with my hands and it helps keep me away from getting sucked into screen time.

How I will feel at the end of this year having made progress on this goal: It will be amazing to add another of my ornaments to the tree.

Starting steps: 1. Spend 10 hours per month stitching. 2. Twenty minutes per day.

How I will know I accomplished or made progress on this goal: I will ship it back to the lovely ladies at Needlepoint.com when it’s done!

Encouraging words: Produce more than you consume.

How I will celebrate at the end of 2018: I will buy my next ornament for 2019 and make this a new tradition.

Goal 4

Goal 4: Budget together to hit our financial goals. Casey and I are being very ambitious in our financial goals in 2018. We plan to 1. Pay off my ECSI (Student) loan. 2. Pay off my car loan. 3. Max out Casey’s TSP match. 4. Cash flow our wedding. 5. Get Casey’s Cow loan below 10K.

Why? We firmly believe in making sacrifices now so that we are establishing a solid financial future together, and that wills tart by cash flowing our wedding and paying off our debt.

The positive effect taking action on this goal may have on my life and others: This will bring us very close to debt-free (besides the house).

How I will feel at the end of this year having made progress on this goal: SO GOOD. I have been working to pay off debt for what feels like forever and this year we could almost get there!

Starting steps: We have a budget and a plan so it’s just a matter of sticking to it.

How I will know I accomplished or made progress on this goal: This is a numbers thing- do or do not.

Encouraging words: “Live like no one else, so that you can live and give like no one else.”

How I will celebrate at the end of 2018: We will have an AMAZING honeymoon.

Goal 5

Goal 5: Date each other more intentionally. Monthly date nights out, Weekly date nights in.

Why? We love dating each other but in the chaos of day-to-day life it can be easy to slip into a routine.

The positive effect taking action on this goal may have on my life and others: We will grow in our relationship.

How I will feel at the end of this year having made progress on this goal: Madly in love with my by-then husband 😍

Starting steps: Plan our first date nights out.

How I will know I accomplished or made progress on this goal: We will plan for these dates every month.

Encouraging words: Fly me to the moon ❤

How I will celebrate at the end of 2018: Our wedding, duh!

Goal 6

Goal 6: Correct legal and business system for the business. I mean, contracts, websites, client onboarding processes, content, lead generation, and systems.

Why? I know how important it is to have all of these processes in place, especially if I want the business to grow. I also know how important contracts are, but can be lazy or complacent. They’ve protected me in the past so I need to get these all sorted out.

The positive effect taking action on this goal may have on my life and others: I will have the peace of mind of knowing things are done right!

How I will feel at the end of this year having made progress on this goal: I know that once this is sorted out, I can scale and grow more quickly!

Starting steps: 1. Utilize CAI to review the four kinds of contracts that I need. 2. Document ideal onboarding process. 3. Spin up quick Squarespace site.

How I will know I accomplished or made progress on this goal: I will always want to improve the business, but these are foundational items that will allow me to focus on bigger projects.

Encouraging words: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

How I will celebrate at the end of 2018: A nice bonu$

Goal 7

Goal 7: Invest in ME without spending any more money. Finish courses that I’ve bought and not finished (I’m looking at you EBA), mastermind, and cultivating my data brand.

Why? I have materials for me to grow! I just have to take advantage of them!

The positive effect taking action on this goal may have on my life and others: I will grow as a professional and I’ll feel lest wasteful because I’m taking advantage of what I already have.

How I will feel at the end of this year having made progress on this goal: Accomplished!

Starting steps: Make progress on whatever course I’m doing and only do one at at time.

How I will know I accomplished or made progress on this goal: I will keep a list of all the courses that I finish this year!

Encouraging words: “You can’t have a million dollar dream with a minimum wage work ethic.”

How I will celebrate at the end of 2018: Not sure yet.

Goal 8

Goal 8: Rebrand all content from Burke Does to XXX. I’m not sure that I’ve mentioned this here yet, but no better time than now to drop that hint- we’re rebranding! New name, new domain, same great content 😄 I’ll share more about this in the future, but for a couple of different reasons (including that I’m getting married!!) I wanted to move away from my name, so new name to be revealed soon!

Why? There’s a LOT of content on this site. Nearly 400 posts and that’s just that I haven’t already gone through in preparation for this! Given my future vision, I want to have coherency in my messaging, my graphics, and my content, so this needs to get done!!

The positive effect taking action on this goal may have on my life and others: Well, I think that this will definitely grow the amount of money I make from the blog (#SorryNotSorry), which is great, but not the primary motivation. I think in some ways this is a dream that I’ve had for a while and I’m excited to feel like I’ve finally found the right fit.

How I will feel at the end of this year having made progress on this goal: Great! I will do justice to me and my blog!

Starting steps: 1. Plan content into audit categories and prioritize. 2. Redo pillar posts with new graphics, opt-ins, and affiliate links. 3. Review! Review! Review!

How I will know I accomplished or made progress on this goal: All the content is interlinked and updated. Every post has new on-brand graphics, affiliate links, a relevant opt-in and links to at least two other posts.

Encouraging words: Remember the mission: “Inspiring millennial women to live financially, physically, and professionally fit lives.”

How I will celebrate at the end of 2018: I will be able to dream about the next phase of growth for 2019!
