When I first moved to Fayetteville, I was lonely. If you’re a regular reader around here, this isn’t new information. I’ve shared before about how I was miserable on my 23rd birthday and how I joined my gym just so I wouldn’t be so lonely. I’m generally a pretty happy, glass-half-full kinda gal, but I’d be lying if I didn’t acknowledge that at least some of the time, life can suck.

Part of being happy, though, is choosing to celebrate the great things in life. This especially means celebrating the people in your life, no matter where they may be or where you may be.  Military life is hard for lots of reasons, but being far from dear friends or family doesn’t make it easier. What I’ve learned in my time here at Bragg, though, is that you can easily grow where you are planted and create your own community and family here.

I would consider myself successful at having done that. I am blessed to have friends who would bail me out of a flat tire, bring me soup if I had the flu, or watch my dog if we suddenly had to travel for a funeral. With Mother’s Day around the corner, I don’t want to miss out on celebrating these special women in my life here, most of whom are mamas. Being blessed with so many different women in my life, though, can make it hard to do that in a way that doesn’t break the bank.

Experience Something Together

I don’t really love yoga, but I love doing yoga with other people. For $20 for both of you, you and a dear friend could go get your stretchy on and spend some special one-on-one time together. Keep your eyes peeled on Facebook or local community groups to see if you can find even better deals. For example, a local wine bar does Wine & Yoga nights and another local venue does Yoga & Mimosas.

Buy Only One

If you’re like me, you may find getting a pedicure to be one of the ultimate indulgences. I certainly do. Unfortunately, indulging you and your friend could pose a bit of a problem to your budget, especially if you haven’t been particularly prepared for it. Instead, consider buying a gift certificate for a pedicure and offering to babysit the kiddos. That’ll give that special mama some indulgent one-on-one time!

Just Tell Them

There’s nothing like just telling someone that you appreciate them! Sit her down and say “Thank you for being a blessing in my life!” If you’re too shy, though, consider writing a note. I love getting sweet notes. You can really show her just how you’ve been thinking of her. Forethought means a lot!

If you’re looking to get the special mama or pseudo-mama in your life a sweet card to write your note in, American Greetings has the perfect Mother’s Day card for every mom! Through the 14th, American Greetings will be having a Buy 3 cards, Save $2 promotion at select PXs. This is the perfect way to celebrate the many lovely women in your life! There are so many options and I’m sure you’ll be able to find the perfect card for the special women in your life. With the promotion going on, it’s hard to not indulge and get a couple! You could even snail-mail one to the lovely ladies in your life who are no longer at your current post or who you connected with while living somewhere else.

A card takes up little to no room in your purse but could mean wonders to the special lady on the receiving end of it.

Mail It to Them

Like I said, just because the special women in your life are far away doesn’t mean you can’t spoil her. Snail mail is still much appreciated. After perusing many cards in the store, I picked up three to share with some of the special mamas in my life. At home I perused them and was sure to pick a very special on for my mom.

Even the envelopes are beautiful enough that you don’t have to mail them inside of a nicer envelope!

I’ve always said that life is easier when we work together and I truly do believe that. Working together, though, is not something to be taken for granted. It’s important to show the wonderful women in your life just how much they means to you! A simple card is a great and easy way to do that!
