I recently wrote on The Importance of Planning for Angie over on My So-Called Chaos. As I mentioned there, my venture into planning is nothing new. Planning and staying organized is a lifestyle that I’ve developed over many years. In many way I’m very grateful. I can’t really imagine living a life without my planner.
That being said, here’s some of my tips for how to plan effectively…
A Note on Digital: I use iCal for the digital portion of planning. My company uses GoogleCal, but iCal lets me integrate it so that I can have my appointments and schedules in one place both on my computer and my phone.
By tapping into this digital component, I separate my appointments from things I need to get done. It gives me the opportunity to stay on top of the different tasks and obligations in my life in a way that suits my needs.
Paper Planning: The Erin Condren Life Planner
Isn’t she beautiful? This is the Erin Condren Life Planner which is at the core of how I do my paper planning. The ECLP organizes their days vertically, with three boxes under each day. In the past, these boxes have been labeled “Morning, Day, Night.” That is no longer the case going forward- yes, they’re coming blank.
I use washi to cover those boxes if I’m not going to be using them, as you see in the picture above. Some weeks, I will also put washi in the boxes if I have excess space (lol, jk, in my dreams).
The morning, day, and night structure is not relevant to me because I keep my appointments somewhere else. I split my boxes into categories that are relevant in a given week- usually, work, school, and blogging. I usually use stickers to rename the boxes but with the new design coming out, you will be able to just write whatever title suits you.

I, like many others, use stickers to really customize my planner. I love my stickers so much that I’ve partnered with Ryan from Ryan’s Custom Designs to have offer a special promo code to all of my readers. Use Coupon Code EMILIE15 for 15% off purchases of $10 or more.
With my stickers I will highlights tasks that need to get done- things like Laundry or the Scandal premiere (how much longer?!).
Here is the most important thing you can remember about planning: THERE IS NO RIGHT WAY TO DO IT. Yes, you read that right. You have to plan in a way that works for you. I like to plan on Sundays for the week. Others prefer Fridays for the following week. You just have to do what is right for you!
