Happy New Year Friends!
How do you feel about the first week of the year being in the books?! If you’re new around these parts, you might not know this, but I’m obsessed with keeping track of weeks by their number of the year. In other words, I think about today as the end of Week 1 and tomorrow starts Week 2. I do this because it helps me stay focused on where we are in the year and keep track of where I am in relation to Week 52!
As always, I have a cup of Zest Tea, my favorite caffeinated tea, in my hand. I drink Zest Tea because I want the boost of energy without the jitters and the soothing taste of tea without the lack of caffeine. I grew up working in Dunkin Donuts and have declared coffee off limits since then, so tea it is! You can get $5 off your first Zest Tea order by using my referral link.
I thought I’d take this week’s Saturday morning to reintroduce yourself to me. As Erica says, “finding a new lifestyle blog like this is often like picking up in the middle of a novel where one has no idea what’s going on,” so let me take a minute to tell you about myself.
👋 I’m Emilie. I’m engaged to the handsome love of my life that I met by happenstance in college. We’re planning a wedding in September in my home state of New Jersey. Long distance wedding planning is oh so fun.
The great thing about marrying your college sweetheart though is that you get to reminisce about how old you are and how far away all of your college memories seem 🙃 We both graduated college in 2015- I from Princeton University and C from West Point, making him an LT in the Army, making me an Army-wife-to-be.
After graduation, we did our own things for a bit. I lived in Baltimore, MD for nearly a year working for an ed-tech start up where I was employee #9. I transitioned to remote work in mid-2016 when I moved to Fort Bragg, NC to be with Casey. I left that job in December 2016 to join a direct-to-consumer e-commerce startup roughly in the health sphere as their first dedicated data hire. In July 2017, I incorporated as an S Corp in the state of North Carolina and have been doing contract data work ever since. #entrepreneurship I work from home full time which can be lonely at times, but I’m lucky to belong to a group of awesome communities on- and off-line that help combat that.
I live in North Carolina, in a house we own, with our dog #BotheAmericanBulldog. He is a 4-year-old rescue that we adopted in July 2016. He’s been eating my shoes and making my heart happy ever since. Having a bad day? All you need to do is lay on the carpet near Bo and he will make your bad day turn around.
I started doing Crossfit in August 2016 and have been hooked ever since. My interest and commitment has waned a bit over time, but I’m getting back into it (especially as I plan for that #weddingbod 😉).
I’ve been writing about paying off debt for a while. I made about 14K of progress in 2017. I’m not one for “gazelle intense” but am one for “aggressively pay down debt while living a happy lifestyle”, so in addition to making a nice dent in my debt balance, I also traveled to Brasil, Portugal, Spain, and France, as well as a number of domestic trips. I got bit by the travel bug back in 2013 when I backpacked through South America for 8 weeks by myself. This year, I have two international trips planned: one to Chile & Peru and one to Jamaica.
I like to consider myself and avid reader, but that totally depends on your definition of “avid.” I read 26 books in 2016 and 33 in 2017, so I’m aiming for 36 in 2018. I mostly read professional development books and memoirs. I’m not that into fiction, to be honest, but that’s my personality type. This month, I’m trying to read The Gifts of Imperfection by Brene Brown, 168 Hours by Laura Vanderkam, and Rework by Jason Fried & David Heinemeier Hansson.
By the way, personality type: “Aggressively Type A.” I don’t know if that’s an actual term, but it’s the only term for me. I’m trying to get better at being, but it’s a hard core weakness of mine. I’m working at it through a couple of daily habits, including writing on my Freewrite and stitching every day.
I started blogging back in college as a procrastinated writing my thesis! I’ve been at it ever since. I publish here most Mondays with the occasionally skipped Monday and an occasional weekday post thrown in.
I don’t really like commenting on blogs, so rather than comment, can you please send me an email at emilie(at)burkedoes(dot)com? In your email, tell me your name, where you’re from, and a bit about you. That way, it’s like we’re drinking our Saturday Morning Teas together 😄 Happy Saturday, let’s make it a great one!
