Oh man, does this week feel like all Mondays or what? I can see you nodding in agreement. I feel you.
Did you notice what’s new?! Yes, Burke Does looks different now! This has been in the works a while and I’m so glad it’s finally launched.
The last time Burke Does was redesigned was in September 2015, over a year and a half ago. At the time, BD was launching as primarily a crafting space. That was wholly idealistic because I have not posted about crafting at all since then- not once. There’s a lesson here in about letting your path guide you instead of planning the heck out of something you’re not passionate about, but that’s another discussion for another time.
When I knew that I wanted to make some redesign changes, I reached out to Fran. I’ve worked with Fran before, including on the design of my portfolio site. After the initial design phases, Fran came up with this logo and its variations and I was immediately in love.
Thank for Fran for turning my vision into a reality. If you’re ever looking for someone to help you with a design, let me recommend Fran! So worth every penny of the investment.
Here are some of the key changes:
There’s a homepage now! There has not been a homepage on BD for a while. At some point, I decided I wanted you to be able to just see the content. After a lot of reflecting and deciding what I wanted you to see when you came to the site, I knew I wanted to have a homepage. I wanted to be able to point you to the things that most capture what I’m trying to do with this space.
On the homepage (this link will open it in a new tab) you’ll now see the most recent post and its preview text. Below that you’ll see the handful of our most recent posts with their graphics and names. This is still the best way for you to see the most recent posts published on BD.
Below that you’ll see four categories: Debt Repayment, Goals, Technology, and Finances. As much as I want to keep this space casual- aka not really willing/interested in selling out my soul to make money- I would like to just focus more. I never want Burke Does to be an obligation for me, but I want to really focus on what I’m building here. These are the directions I’ve felt pulled to focus on for a while now, so it’s the direction I’ll continue to focus on.
There is no more sidebar on the post page. See this one you’re looking at right now? No side bar on either the right or left side! This was done quite intentionally. I want you to be able to focus on posts without …. squirrel, er, shiny thing in the sidebar. Really, I just want to make it as easy as possible to read what I’m writing.
There is only one ad on this site and it’s at the end of posts. It will be going soon. In fact, as soon as I receive the next payout, it’s gone. I don’t have ads on the site for one simple reason: I don’t like seeing ads as I’m going through the internet, so I don’t want you to have to see them here, no matter how much money it could help me make. This is something that’s really important to me. That being said, I will still have sponsored content which is a different form of advertising (and revenue generation- need to keep the lights on).
Refining and recategorizing
There was once a time that I tagged a post with all the possible categories it fit into. Going into the coming weeks, I’ll be revisiting old posts to be sure they’re in the best categories. I want to make it as easy as possible for you to find what you’re looking for.
How is your experience?
Is something here confusing? Is there something about the site that is unclear or that you’d like to see changed? Tell me in the comments what you think of the experience of finding things you’re looking for on the site! Look for your favorite post!
